State of the Art in Artificial Intelligence applied
to the Legal Domain
AbstractWhile Artificial Intelligence applied to the legal domain is a topic withorigins in the last century, recent advances in Artificial Intelligence areposed to revolutionize it. This work presents an overview and contextu-alizes the main advances on the field of Natural Language Processing andhow these advances have been used to further the state of the art in legaltext analysis.1 IntroductionEvery country in the world bases its inner workings in a complex juridical sys-tem. For instance, in Portugal, the Official Portuguese Gazette (Di´ario daRep´ublica) is the venue for the publication of all laws and norms of the Por-tuguese Republic. More than a million and a half juridic acts are currently ac-tive, and more than a thousand new ones are published in Di´ario da R´epublicaElectr´onico (DRE) every month. This online resource provides access to all ofthe Portuguese legislation, as well as services that allow citizens to find the lawsand norms that they look for.It is clearly important that this type of information is easily accessible to allcitizens given that there are rights they have and obligations they must abide
